The Aim of HSOA is to link Harpenden with poor communities in sub-Saharan Africa to alleviate poverty there. Its first project has been the funding of staff salaries and maintenance costs of a slum area school in Uganda. Provision of school buildings to replace makeshift classrooms will take place soon.

By responding quickly to emergencies, Muslim Aid Australia provides relief to survivors of natural disasters, and human-caused disasters (war, civil-strife, displacement). Muslim Aid Australia also undertakes long-term development projects on education and training, provision of clean water and healthcare, and re-establishing livelihoods to break cycles of endemic poverty. Since 2001, Muslim Aid Australia was approved by Australian Taxation Office to offer Tax deductibility for donations it receives; which are for the purposes of relief in certified developing countries.
