Denis O'Connor Walk (IE, MYC0046) Browse events

YTD Raised: €0.00

The Denis O’Connor Walking Festival is an annual event that aims to raise funds for deserving causes. For the last number of years, people in KPMG, the alumni, family and friends have raised money for a number of charities. This year we have chosen AWARE as the beneficiary of the walk. Aware was founded in 1985 and the organisation developed in response to the clear need for information, understanding and support, both for individuals who had a diagnosis of depression or bipolar as well as family members supporting a loved one. Today is has a nationwide presence which has saved many lives and has, for countless others, eased the suffering and distress that depression can bring. The three pillars of Aware’s work are information, education and support. The organisation provides a range of services including group meetings offering support and information, a telephone and email support service, and a number of programmes based on the principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). More than 450,000 people in Ireland experience depression (1 in 10) at any one time but many hide their condition and never get help. Aware’s message is one of hope: recovery is possible. Early intervention, as well as ongoing support are very important. Educating and empowering people to look after their mental health is also an integral part of Aware’s work. They offer a range of programmes aimed at educating teenagers aged 15-18 about positive mental health, how to deal with challenges in life, and how to build resilience. Some key points regarding the need for such programmes: • The OECD reports that the average age of onset for all mental health issues is 14 years of age, with an average gap to treatment of 10 years. Students generally don’t seek or receive assistance until after they have left college. • With no mental health education on the senior cycle curriculum in schools, this age range are not receiving adequate formal education and access to coping skills to assist them with life’s challenges and with their mental wellbeing. 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the Denis O’Connor Walking Festival which is being organised in memory of our much respected and greatly missed former Managing Partner who passed away in December 2006. The Denis O’Connor Walking Festival is an annual event that aims to raise funds for deserving causes. For the last number of years, people in KPMG, the alumni, family and friends have raised money for a number of charities. Over the last nine years we have raised over €460,000 for very worthwhile causes. This year we are supporting the charity AWARE, which was founded in 1985 and the organisation developed in response to the clear need for information, understanding and support, both for individuals who had a diagnosis of depression or bipolar as well as family members supporting a loved one.
