OMRA is a small volunteer-based charity which uses a grocery card fundraising program and tax-deductible donations to help recently arrived refugees and asylum seekers get established. OMRA has been operating since 2001. OMRA also partners with other like-minded, non-profit organizations to understand the obstacles to affordable housing in Ottawa, to look for solutions and to identify opportunities for joint advocacy. Our advocacy efforts involve maintaining current information on housing policies and regulations, identifying and meeting with key decision-makers, sharing information with groups such as Refugee 613’s Task Force on Housing, and supporting targeted advocacy actions. OMRA does not engage in partisan political activities.

South Manchester Down's Syndrome Support Group is a local parent-led charity, which supports children and adults who have Down’s syndrome and their families. We provide activities, social events, speech and language therapy, information and training to enable our young people to fulfil their potential. We offer opportunities for parents/carers to meet, share information and experiences,develop support networks and celebrate successes, and for children and siblings to make friends and have fun. We support new parents by providing support and friendship through a local network. We run training courses for parents and professionals, delivered by leading practitioners, which address the specific learning profile of individuals who have Down’s syndrome, demonstrating best practice strategies to promote learning and development. Activities include Chatterbox club, pre-school group, drama and events like the exclusive use of a soft play centre, interactive storytelling, and a very popular Christmas party! We have a library of resources which members can borrow and we get involved in initiatives such as the DSA’s Tell it Right, Start it Right training for midwives and its WorkFit programme supporting adults with Down’s syndrome into meaningful work-related activities. Today, nearly 60% of Africa’s population is below the age of 25, and that percentage is growing. If they are given the learning opportunity they deserve, they could change poverty in their countries. Most of the children live in underserved rural areas we work with don’t benefit from the quality of education especially digital learning. Nearly 9 out of 10 youth in Africa between the ages of 15 and 24 – are not connected to the internet. To be disconnected in a digital world is to lose an opportunity to learn, build essential skills, and at-risk children have fewer chances to succeed. Investing in children’s education and access to technology seems to be a promising future for young people in Africa to step out of extreme poverty.
