(UK, 1151771) Browse eventsThe Studio (ADHD) Centre is a small, unique charity which provides a specialist resource for children, adolescents and their families suffering with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Aspergers Syndrome and other complex behavioural needs. Often, ADHD is just seen as naughty behaviour or bad parenting. However, it is now recognised as a neurological developmental disorder affecting about 5% of the school-age population - as common as dyslexia in fact. It is acknowledged to be a persistent and chronic condition for which no medical cure is available, although it can be managed with medication. It tends to affect boys more than girls (a ratio of 5:1) and the condition can continue into adulthood. Untreated ADHD can result in: * Rebellious and anti-social behaviour * Little stability or success in social and peer relationships * Financial instability and often excessive debt * Exclusion from school and intermittent employment * Addictive personalities (drug and alchohol use) * Self harm * Involvement with the criminal justice system * Family breakdown However, if their energies are channelled and focussed correctly, young people with ADHD possess positive leadership, creative and entrepreneurial skills and the potential to become our next generation of pioneers in all areas of society - think Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg and Winston Churchill, to name but a few! The Studio has developed a unique style of therapy using visual concepts that significantly improve the understanding of key social and emotional principles, including motivation, anger management, consequences and self awareness. We are committed to providing early intervention to those at risk of exclusion, suspension or non-attendance at school resulting from behavioural problems. We work with the family as a whole to achieve the best results. Our highly successful Activity Programme continues to be a key part of the therapeutic style of our organisation. This programme helps to develop physical and emotional confidence together with self discipline, relationship and team work skills. Education outside the classroom can stimulate and inspire, foster independence and interest in the wider world. As a registered Duke of Edinburgh Award Unit, we encourage young people to look for success in leisure, sport, voluntary and community work. To this end we engage them in a variety of interests and activities including climbing, angling, motor mechanics, leadership and survival courses, team building, canoeing and many more. During these activities parents have an opportunity to meet other parents in similar circumstances and many new friendships are forged. The Studio has become increasingly recognised for its expertise and acknowledged as a pioneer in the field of ADHD. To our knowledge, we are the only centre of its kind in Surrey.
