Aphasia is caused by stroke or other damage to the language centres of the brain. Head injury, tumours, or infections and inflammation in the brain may be other causes. Aphasia affects every person differently. Some people have only mild difficulties, others have very severe communication problems. Importantly, people with aphasia are competent and intelligent and still have thoughts, opinions and emotions. They can still solve problems and can still make decisions. However people with aphasia often know what they want to say, but have difficulties getting their messages out.

Canopy Housing renovates empty homes in Leeds, UK for people at risk of homelessness. Our staff, tenants and volunteers are collectively walking 500 miles this year to raise money so that we can continue doing the brilliant work we do! Canopy runs on the belief that everybody deserves a chance and everyone deserves a home. We are based in some of the most deprived part of Leeds, where derelict houses are a common site. We renovate these houses with our volunteers and self-helpers to create more homes for those at risk of homelessness. Our self-helpers are people in need of housing who help renovate their own home before moving in. We think choosing how to decorate your house is an important part of making it a home. We want our self helpers to feel empowered by this process. Our self-helpers then become our tenants who receive on-going support from our tenant support worker. We support our tenants with any issues they have , be it needing help filling out a form or accessing legal support. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and help us to renovate our houses. Some come from a skilled background and volunteer their expertise to us, others volunteer to build up their confidence, to benefit their mental well being, to improve their English or to combat social isolation. We support our volunteers with whatever their goals may be.Above all things Canopy believes in people. The Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) is the only national, independent organisation in Australia dedicated solely to young people. We believe that all young people have the courage, imagination and will to shape their education and create social change. Our vision is for the future is one where no matter who they are, no matter where they are, Australia's young people: - have a sense of purpose and meaning; - are confident and connected; and - have an optimistic vision for their future. Our strategy is to create generational transformation. Over the next ten years two million young Australians’ lives will be enhanced, ignited and re-imagined because FYA provided them with opportunities to: > Influence and shape their education and learning experience > Transform their worldview by giving their time and talent to others in Australia and overseas > Lead their communities in innovative responses to the social, environmental and cultural issues they currently face.
