(AU, Milpera State High School P&C - N/A) Browse eventsMilpera State High School is a state secondary school which provides English language, and intensive settlement services to prepare newly arrived immigrant and refugee students for participation in secondary schools around the Brisbane area. Milpera School is committed to maximising the full human potential of every student within a socially just and culturally inclusive environment. We achieve this by delivering a quality educational and settlement service that is needs based in order to gain the best learning and settlement outcomes for our learners and their families. Milpera Parents’ and Citizens’ Association works to provide support to newly arrived families, particularly those of refugee background, so that their children can participate fully in all the educational opportunities available to them at Milpera. Parents of our newly arrived families are not usually in a position to provide support to the school, as they themselves are settling in Australia, learning about the culture and beginning to learn English. As a result, fundraising for Milpera P&C relies on the goodwill of school staff and the wider community. Examples of support that Milpera P&C provides for students of refugee background, and their families, include: • Subsidising student participation in excursions, camps and other acculturation activities; • Subsidising purchase of school equipment for some families; • Providing a free breakfast program for students who arrive at school without eating • Providing some emergency relief to Milpera students and/or their families in crisis.
