(IE, MYC0210) Browse eventsAt aged 15 Margaret had the symptoms of Schwannomatosis but as the condition wasn't identified yet It took almost 3 years of tests and of the doctors telling her family that she had nothing more than growing pains for them to finally operate and find a large tumour wrapped around the bottom of my spine .That was removed and I was sent home to recover never imagining what was ahead.About 2 years later Margaret was back in hospital to have another one removed from her armpit and then her calf. After that she had a series of 13 other operations from her neck to the base of her spine removing or debulking tumours. By this stage Margaret had missed her Leaving Cert while she was trying to find out what was wrong. While her friends moved to college she was lying in bed in pain all day.Around this time she got a call from a Professor Andrew Green to say a gene had been identified for a new condition called Schwannomatosis and he thought that was what Margaret had. The gene was INI1 and I was positive.Schwannomatosis causes tumours to grow on nerves and causes severe uncontrollable pain. Margaret was told there was approximately 4 other people in the country with it .Because the pain was so severe she had a morphine pump fitted which released morphine through the body at hourly intervals combined with oral meds. This didn't work and the pain got worse .A further scan showed multiple tumours all over her spine and pelvis which were unoperable but by then Margaret was practically housebound from the painEventually Margaret was sent to CUH by ambulance for pain relief by her GP and the surgeon agreed to operate again. When he did Margaret picked up sepsis with complete organ failure and was put into a induced coma. She wasn't given much chance of survival.Thankfully Margaret survived but when she awoke from the coma Margaret was paralysed both from the waist down and her right arm. After fighting infection after infection she was finally sent to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. There they brought a lot of power back to her arm and hand. They also helped with her legs and though Margaret will never walk again they taught her to use the wheelchair and strengthen her upper body. Now Margaret is at home and needs to be as independent as possible but without the correct equipment such as the proper wheelchair, the correct size kitchen, essential exercise equipment, on-going medical care and an adapted car etc., it is almost impossible to achieve independence. Margaret would like to thank everyone who has donated to her cause. It is greatly appreciated.
