The University of Bristol Hodgkin Scholarship supports students from the developing world to access world class higher education, where they are not able to in their home country for political or social reasons (including race, gender and war). One candidate per year is funded (generally) to study at the University of Bristol and the scholarship is a joint initiative between the University and the Students' Union. Each year students of the University fund raise towards the scholarship. In recent years the work of the Trust has focussed on sub-Saharan Africa including Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan. Candidates are accepted on the basis that they intend to use the qualification gained in a way that will further the development of their country. Recent scholars have gone on to work in fields including education, gender equality and agriculture development.

Founded in 1985 by a group of ex-patients who, together with their relatives and friends started a support group for patients experiencing heart problems. Sister McLellan at the then Groby Road Hospital had heard of the benefits of support for patients before and after surgery, and she instigated the first meeting at the start of 1986 when a committee was formed from ex-patients (who wished to be supportive to others and offer ‘a listening ear’), along with some Cardiac Medical staff. The committee started monthly support group meetings held on the first Wednesday of every month for patients and their carers. It was decided to name the group ‘Link-Up’ which subsequently became a registered charity. The first Chairman, Mr. Roger Smith, found that patients wished to make donations, along with other fund raising activities for the benefit of the adult cardiac wards. Support group members made their telephone numbers available so that patients could talk to someone who had gone through similar experiences, hence the need for regular support group meetings. Some years later the name ‘TAKE HEART LEICESTER’ replaced the name ‘Link-Up.
