We fund HVC to work with isolated rural communities and tackle poverty through education, health care, and support for livelihoods. Hope for the Village Child carries out a wide range of activities including the following. Mobile clinics visit isolated villages and provide immunisations and antenatal care to mothers and babies. We train traditional birth attendants in safe delivery practices. Our community based village health worker volunteers can give life saving treatment and prevent common diseases such as malaria, diarrohea and HIV. Many children in Kaduna suffer from ricketts, our support helps these children to access surgery or calcium supplements to strengthen their bones. We help to improve education in rural areas by building and upgrading village schools and providing supplies such books and desks, alongside adult and child literacy classes, and teacher training. Our water programme provides clean drinking water through the construction of wells. We are saving the lives of young children who would otherwise suffer high rates of water borne diseases, and often die before their fifth birthday.
(UK, 1075035) Browse eventsSet up in 1993 by Mick and Angela Prentice, the St Johns First School now thrives with around 350 young children. The school is administered by an elected body of local villagers and receives no help from the Government. Each month the Shonda Project sends funds to pay the salaries of the 13 teachers. There are a high number of single parent families due to a local ferry tragedy some years ago and the ravages of Aids, but those parents who can afford to pay school fees do so. Christmas appeal ~ 2013 Many of the children in Shonda have not travelled even to local attractions, let alone elephants which are only 2 hours away! So we would like to raise some money to send the children on a local school trip - £10 will pay for two children to go ~ a small price to pay for much joy ... Hands up who wants to go on a school trip?!!
