Working closely with Amber Film & Photography Collective, the trust secures the collection which has grown out of its work. The money we raise supports the vital tasks of building awareness of the collection, access to it and engagement with it. We support Side Gallery, Amber’s much-loved venue on Newcastle upon Tyne’s quayside, and the development of the collection. WHAT In 1968 Amber came together around a vision, moving to North East England ‘to collect documents of working class culture’. Sometimes, you begin a journey and you don’t know where it will lead. Nearly 50 years later, the time has come to secure the future of the unique and precious collection that continues to grow from that vision. This is why AmberSide Trust was established. The collection holds 20,000 photographs, 100 films, 10,000 slides and much more. In 2011 the interlinked narrative of Amber’s films and the photographs of collective member Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, which runs like a spine through the whole collection, was inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World register. WHY Starting out on our new journey, there are three things the trust is sure of: 1. We must hold the collection together so future generations can explore and draw on the whole, rich, interconnected narrative - one of the most significant cultural works to have been created in the region over the past 100 years; 2. We must keep it in the North East - it belongs to the region and must be accessible to the people whose stories it tells; 3. The production and the collecting must not stop - it is a living archive and we need to support new work which will take it forward. HOW Supporting AmberSide Trust will see enhanced conservation facilities, improved Side Gallery exhibition programmes, increased digital access, new production and a range of ambitious learning and participation projects - particularly in the communities Amber has documented.
