Now in its 20th year the Ripple Project, started by local people, harnesses the skills and enthusiasm of around 100 volunteers to provide a wide range of well-used services in our community of Restalrig, Lochend & Craigentinny in Edinburgh. Much of this area ranks between the 5 and 15% most deprived in Scotland. Our projects, used by several hundred people weekly, are designed to tackle the many issues we face here and include a daily lunch club and social club for older people with door to door transport included, 1-1 listening support for people in crisis, walking, knitting, exercise and creative writing groups, cooking classes, extensive youth & children’s provision from parent & toddlers and drama groups to drop in youth cafés, girls groups, detached youth work and teenage mentoring. We publish a monthly community newspaper delivered free to 6500 local homes and we also run a community café. Within our base at Restalrig Lochend Community Hub alongside our own projects we host specialist weekly Benefits, Employment and Rent Arrears advice surgeries, computer classes for seniors, English language classes and more. The key to all that we do is the involvement of our wonderful team of volunteers of all ages and abilities who alongside our small staff team contribute so much to making life here better for everyone. Many project users have gone on to become volunteers and provide the help for others that they found here themselves – for us that truly is the Ripple effect.
