Gorgie Church has been involved in the work of Bethany Christian Trust Care Shelter for many years. The Care Shelter began in Edinburgh as a two week pilot and has grown over the years in response to the need. Until December 2018, the Care Shelter used different church venues and guests slept on mats on the floor. Following the union of Stenhouse Church and Gorgie Dalry Church in 2016, GDS Church was formed and an additional buildings acquired at Stenhouse. After prayerful discussion, Bethany Christian Trust was offered the use of the sanctuary at Stenhouse as a regular Care Shelter. The offer was accepted and the new fixed venue opened its doors on the 21st December. GDS church spent £220.000 refurbishing the building including a new extension to house a toilet block and showers all fully accessible. Pews removed and replaced with 75 single beds with blankets and pillows, laundry facilities allowing care staff to wash towels and linen in-house. The guests are delighted to be coming to the same venue each evening and find Diadem a peaceful place with a unique atmosphere. Over 1000 volunteers from more than 70 churches across Edinburgh provide a two course meal each night. However the kitchen is very basic and has proved to be a challenge. Phase 2 included upgrading the kitchen and existing toilet facilities, the cost has been estimated at £190,000 and we need your help to continue the work. Together we can help relieve the suffering of people who are homeless.
