Tumaini is Swahili for Hope. The Tumaini Fund charity was established in 2003 by Guernsey GPs, Dr Susan Wilson and her husband Dr Douglas Wilson, to alleviate the suffering of AIDS widows and orphans in Kagera, the NW region of Tanzania. Tumaini helps by funding orphans through Primary and Secondary education, offering training college loans, vocational training and animal & crop husbandry for widows and orphans, medical support for AIDS sufferers. We have also provided boreholes and shallow wells as part of our clean water project and new houses for deserving orphaned families, have rebuilt a church and have funded a new primary school. Tumaini now supports some 25,000 beneficiaries out of the estimated 150/200,000 orphans in Kagera; every £1 given is a £1 spent directly on these orphans - there are no UK or Guernsey expenses. The work of The Tumaini Fund was recognised in Summer 2013 when Dr Susan Wilson was awarded the MBE by Prince William. Tumaini is a member of the Forum for African Orphans based in St James's Palace, London, a group of like-minded charities working to alleviate suffering in Africa. Tumaini UK has been a registered UK charity since September 2011. The Tumaini Fund has been registered as a charity in Guernsey since 2003 (CH187). There are also independent charities in Florida (Tumaini USA, Inc.), in Vancouver Island (Tumaini Canada), in Aberdeen (Tumaini Scotland) and Christchurch (Tumaini New Zealand). All funds raised by these charities are directed towards the same aims in Tanzania and details can be found on our website www.tumainifund.org.uk
