The Children's Food Trust exists to protect every child's right to eat better and, so, to do better. Our children must be healthy in order to reach their full potential in life. But nearly a quarter of children enter primary school overweight or obese; by the time they get to secondary school, it rises to one-third. More than 400,000 children entitled to free school meals are not having them. In the UK, we rank bottom out of 21 industrialised countries for child well-being. 3.6 million children live in poverty. Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. Obese children are particularly vulnerable to developing health disorders early in life, such as diabetes. Our mission is to make sure every child can have the balanced diet they need in their early years and school days, together with better family cooking skills, lifestyle and food education.
